Janey Schaefer Obituary

Janey Kay (Schermetzler) Schaefer died unexpectedly from cardiac arrest on Monday, October 1st, 2018. She was 68. Janey was born November 4, 1949 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Robert and Laura Schermetzler. In 1967 Janey graduated from Oshkosh High School where she was a straight-A student. She received a full ride scholarship to college, but instead decided to move to California with only $50 in her pocket. First landing in LA, she then moved to San Francisco, where she had a very successful career as a bond trader (one of the few women in the financial industry in the 1980s). She married Ron Schaefer in 1983 and moved to Mill Valley, CA. Janey loved her home on Strawberry Point and lived there for 33 years. She was an amazing cook, kept an impeccable home and loved to entertain. She enjoyed the finer things in life including travel to Europe, especially Paris, and loved delicious food and wine. She was a liberal feminist and political junkie, always up on the news and current events. She was also a huge Golden State Warriors basketball fan and watched every game. Janey was an animal lover. She adored her pets, especially her dogs Chula, Gunter, Winston, Bear, Marilyn the cat, and most recently, her black lab Eddie. After seeing Eddie on the evening news, she was moved by his story and adopted him. She cared for him through multiple hip surgeries, physical therapy and constant care. Janey made many friends through Eddie and appreciated the care and love they gave to him. If you knew Janey, you should consider yourself lucky. She made everyone she met feel special, she was the kindest and most giving person you would ever know. She was someone who gave you all of her attention and could gab for hours around her kitchen table. She didn't judge by outward status, she cared about the person you were on the inside and surrounded herself with extraordinary people. She knew no strangers. She made everyone feel at ease and important as soon as you met her. She was dearly loved and she will be dearly missed.

Janey is survived by her husband Ron, step-sons Brett Schaefer (Jessica) and Kip Schaefer (DeAnna) and their children; her nieces Jessica Anderson (Jeff) and Jenny Hansen (Justin) and great nieces Brenna, Audrey, Charlotte, Violet and great nephew Beckett; along with dear friends (whom she considered family) Joe, Adilson, Neil, Beth and god-daughter Jolie. A celebration of Janey's life will be held on Friday, 11:00 AM, Friday October 26th 2018 at Monte's Chapel of the Hills 333 Red Hill Ave., San Anselmo, CA. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Marin Humane Society.
