Barbara Perkins Obituary

Barbara Perkins, a native of San Francisco and beloved resident of San Rafael for over 60 years, passed away peacefully at her home on November 5, 2024, following a courageous 18-month battle with mesothelioma. Known for her warmth and quiet acts of kindness, Barbara’s legacy is one of love expressed through compassion, generosity, and community service.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Perkins; sons, Craig (Kelly) and Jeff (Kate); cherished grandchildren, Christy Corsinita, Brian Bessette (Anna), Michael Bessette (Kellie May), Ellie Perkins, and Johnny Perkins; and beloved great-grandchildren, Olive Bessette, Poppy Carr, and Colton Carr. Barbara also leaves her nephew, Joe Lakin, and many dear friends.

Born to Henrietta and Jake Fischer in San Francisco, Barbara graduated high school from St. Rose Academy in 1953 and then attended San Jose State University, where she graduated in 1957. When she was a teenager, she met her future husband, Ray Perkins, who was then working at Podesta Baldocchi Florist. They married in 1957 at Old St. Mary’s Church in San Francisco, beginning a lifelong journey of love and devotion.

A dedicated homemaker, Barbara balanced raising her family with serving her community, volunteering countless hours to charities close to her heart. She was a passionate sports fan, cheering on Bay Area teams like the San Francisco Giants, Golden State Warriors, 49ers, San Jose State Spartans, and USF Dons.

Among her favorite pastimes were playing Bridge with lifelong friends and spending summer afternoons at the Northbridge Pool, where she loved to swim. Barbara also had a great love for reading and continued to enjoy books throughout her life.

Barbara’s love of travel took her to destinations near and far. She enjoyed annual trips to Palm Springs, where the sun and warmth recharged her spirit, as well as excursions to Napa Wine Country and Europe, bringing home cherished memories and stories to share.

Barbara’s quiet strength, kindness, and love will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Memorial Mass is to be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 16th at Saint Ignatius Church on the campus of the University of San Francisco (USF).
