Bill Whitney Obituary

Bill Whitney

May 4, 1963 – June 9, 2025

Bill Whitney passed away at his home in San Rafael on June 9, 2025, at  62.

Bill was born in Carmel, CA, and spent his high school years and early adulthood in Redding, CA. He attended Chico State University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering in 1987 and met his lifelong friends. Bill moved to San Rafael in 1993 and lived in the Sun Valley area.

Bill was a certified Professional Engineer at the Transportation Authority of Marin (TAM) for 20 years. His proudest local accomplishments include implementing the bike path between San Rafael and Larkspur, the white bridge near the ferry building at Larkspur Landing, and the bike path linking Larkspur and Corte Madera. He began his career working for the Fairfax Public Works Department and the Golden Gate Bridge District.

Bill is predeceased by his parents, Patricia Greer and Bill Whitney, and his first wife, Roxanne Whitney. He is survived by his stepmom Patricia Whitney, sisters Tawnya Hoppes ( husband Keith),  Teresa Helfman (husband Ben), Step sisters Vickie Wood ( husband Daniel), and Teresa Emmens. Nephews Cody (wife Laurie) Hoppes, Russell (wife Ashley) Hoppes, his mother-in-law Sally Magagna, sister and brother-in-law Julia and Jeff Eader ( son Ryan ), and current wife Carolyn Robello ( stepdaughters Jessica and Francesca Robello). He is greatly missed by his beloved 15-year-old dog Tessa, with whom he was greatly bonded.

Bill has enjoyed spending time on Lake Shasta since 1973 on his houseboat, Mr. Boat, where he spent time with friends boating and fishing. He loved attending and watching  NASCAR races, working on construction and house projects, and always celebrated football Sunday, cheering on the 49ers. He also loved the SF Giants and Golden State Warriors. Bill will be missed for his great laugh, his love of cooking for others, and his immense kindness.

A celebration of life will be planned in both Marin County and Lake Shasta later this year. Please email carolynrobello@yahoo.com for details.
