Carl Hungerford Obituary

Carl Robert Vogt Hungerford, son, brother, husband, and friend, died at the young age of 38. While most of his life was filled with happiness, over the last few months he was suffering and, sadly, on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, Carl ended his life. All who knew Carl remember his brilliant intellect and kind nature. He was admired for his wry sense of humor, infectious laugh, great hair, and twinkling blue eyes. Carl was polite, humble and gracious. His friendships were loyal and solid; his close friends became family. Carl was born on July 27, 1980, at Marin General Hospital and grew up in Ross, California. When Carl was sixteen months old, his sister, Laura, was born, so Carl learned early to be sweet and gentle, caring and loving, and protective. Carl graduated from Ross School and Branson School and spent his sophomore year at Leys School in Cambridge, England. He was intellectually curious and excelled in all subjects, earning awards in speech and debate tournaments, math competitions, and science. Carl earned his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University and his M.A. in Organizational Behavior from the London School of Economics. Carl was an enthusiastic student of the world and traveled extensively. He was especially interested in global culture, politics, and economics, never afraid of a friendly debate, always pulling from his extensive repertoire of facts. Carl's earliest career was in alternative energy. Eventually, his interest in helping people more directly inspired Carl to pursue his M.S. in Nursing from Georgetown University. He moved to DC with his partner, Andy, and following graduation he worked in Cardiac Care at Washington Hospital Center. Carl developed an interest in palliative care and returned to the Bay Area where he and Andy were married in 2015. For the last five years Carl worked with Hospice By The Bay. He was highly skilled and dedicated to his profession; his gift was caring ardently about his hospice patients and advocating passionately for their needs and wishes. Carl was compassionate and thoughtful, witty and humorous, universally respected and trusted. He was nourished by nature. His favorite outings included walking and hiking with friends followed by a meal with lively conversation. Carl was constantly exploring new interests and took cooking classes, earned his bartending license, tutored SAT students, volunteered at Maitri Compassionate Care, and served on the board of his condominium association. In 2008, Carl wrote a book entitled "Finding the Middle, A Comprensive Non-Partisan Guide to American Politics Today." He loved listening to NPR's Fresh Air and Bloggingheads.tv. Carl treasured every summer in Montana at his family's vacation home on Flathead Lake, swimming, paddle boarding, and exploring Wild Horse Island. He loved driving the boat, picking cherries, wake boarding, and talking late at night under the Big Sky stars with a stick over the bonfire roasting marshmallows for s'mores. Carl may have left our physical world but will never leave our hearts. He leaves behind husband Andrew Dvorak, devoted rescue jackawawa Pattie, mother Katy and her husband Francis McGovern, sister Laura Hungerford McNealey (Alex), other siblings Henry McGovern (Michelle), Elizabeth Brann (Michael), Clare Lewis (Chris) as well as other loving family. Carl was preceded in death by his father Mark Calvin Hungerford, in 2005. There will be a private family graveside service at Fernwood Cemetery. September 22 in San Francisco there will be an "Out of the Darkness Walk to Fight Suicide". Friends are invited to join us on September 23 at 2:00pm at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross for a Celebration of Carl's Life.
