David Guggenhime Obituary

To know David Guggenhime was to witness a life rich with purpose, generosity and unwavering devotion - to family, community and every child he believed in. David, the son of Richard and Charlotte Guggenhime, grew up in San Francisco with his older brother Richard, where he attended Grant School, Lowell High School and went on to study at both Stanford University and UC Santa Cruz. A devoted fan of Stanford sports, David remained a true Cardinal throughout his life.
After a successful career in the investment business, David pursued his true passion, helping others.  He made a lasting impact through his involvement in Big Brothers, the San Francisco Foundation (Marin Community Foundation), the I Have A Dream Foundation and many others. David regarded education as the most powerful tool to transform lives. His proudest accomplishment was founding the Marin City Children’s Program which offered educational support to 29 children, beginning in kindergarten, with a commitment to support their academic and personal success through high school and beyond. His family was honored that many of these program participants, now approaching 40, visited and called in his final days, a testament to the lasting impact of his kindness and mentorship.
David was a dedicated father who always prioritized time with his children, Kristin and Jim Guggenhime. In 1990, David met the love of his life, Marjorie Ashe Kropp. Their deep bond brought warmth and joy throughout his life. David embraced Margie‘s sons, Adam and Matt Kropp, and together they have 10 cherished grandchildren, whom David delighted in advising, encouraging, and occasionally besting in a spirited game of dominoes.
He loved to travel, especially with Stanford and his family. He dragged Margie to ice fields around the world. He fancied himself a vegetable gardener, and had a wicked sense of humor. David’s greatest gift was his ability to be present – truly present – in others’ times of need. He was a remarkable listener, a source of empathy, and a man whose compassion showed in everything he did. He will be greatly missed.
