Dorothy Jean Ratto (Whiteley)
April 28, 1937 – April 29, 2025
Dorothy, lovingly known as Dottie to friends and Mom and Nonni to her beloved family, passed away peacefully on April 29th at the age of 88. Born in Los Angeles to Charles and Florence Whiteley, Dorothy spent most of her life in Terra Linda where she built a legacy of love, generosity, and faith. Known for her warm smile and gentle spirit, she brought comfort and joy to everyone she met.
Dorothy was the youngest sibling of Chauncey and Maynard Whiteley and Juanita Lyman. She and her sister shared a deep, lifelong bond — a connection rooted in their devotion to faith, family, and shared joy as mothers of large families.
At 17, Dorothy married the love of her life, Frank, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage until his passing in 2006. Together they raised 11 children: Frank (Celyn), Sissy, Debbie Ependendio, Anthony (deceased; Mary Beth), Troy (Carolyn), Cathi Matsumura (David), Evie Ronshausen (Jeff), Bubba (Nancy), Kevin (Liesa), Dino (deceased), and Derek. She was the proud grandmother of 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom knew her simply as Nonni — a title she cherished.
Once her youngest entered elementary school, Dorothy began working as a high school cafeteria worker. Whether at home or at work, she was a nurturer — steady, selfless, and devoted.
Her deep Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. A member of St. Isabella Parish for over 60 years, she gave countless hours in service — organizing, cooking, and helping wherever needed.
A phenomenal cook and the heart of her home, Dorothy welcomed all with open arms and a meal. Her house was always full — not only with her own family, but with the many “extra” kids who came to play, swim, or simply be near her kindness. If you walked through her door, you were family.
She could often be seen walking the dog, cheering at sporting events, clapping at school performances, or attending Grandparents Day — always present, always proud.
Dorothy Jean Ratto lived a life rooted in family, faith, and kindness. She leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A Rosary Service will be held on Sunday, May 4th at 5pm, and a Funeral Mass on Monday, May 5th at 11am — both at St. Isabella’s Church, 1 Trinity Way, San Rafael. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Alzheimer’s Association.
