In Loving Memory of Gene Allen Childs
Gene Allen Childs, of San Anselmo, California, passed away on August 5th, 2023, at the age of 86. He was born in Canon City, Colorado, on December 24th, 1936, to the late Theodore Clifford Childs and Margaret Venita (Alderson) Childs. Gene spent his formative years in Pueblo, Colorado, and later embarked on a journey that would lead him to the beautiful California Bay Area, where he met his future wife, Margaret Katherine (Maher). Gene and Margaret moved to London, where they shared seven years together before finally settling in San Anselmo. Gene's professional journey began with the Steelworks Center of the West. Later in his career, he joined Factory Mutual (FM Global).
He served in the U.S. Navy as an Intelligence officer from March 1959--July 1961 and was assigned to Attack Squadron 76. Eleven months Mediteranean duty, two months Carribean duty, and four to five months off the Atlantic Coast was spent aboard the USS Intrepid. Beyond his career, Gene was committed to his family and to serving others. He volunteered at Marin Suicide Prevention and served as a catechist, lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Ross, Ca. He was also involved in the Cursillo movement. Gene was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous since Feb 9th 1983 and dedicated to supporting others seeking recovery. Gene is survived by his daughters, Caroline Bonham and Katy Childs, and his son, Kevin Childs. He was a cherished grandfather to his granddaughters, Abby Childs, Delilah Chavez, and Soriah Chavez, as well as his grandsons, Jack (Ace) Childs and Patricio Chavez. He was predeceased by his dear mother, Margaret Venita (Alderson) Childs, and his father, Theodore Clifford Childs. As we bid farewell to Gene Allen Childs, we celebrate the memories he leaves behind. Gene's legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and his contributions to his community will be remembered. A funeral mass will be held on August 19th at 11:00am at St. Anselm’s church, 97 Shady Ln, Ross, CA where we will gather to honor the life of Gene Allen Childs. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Marin Suicide Prevention or a charity of your choice, as a tribute to Gene's passion for helping others.
With love and remembrance,
