After earning a BA in Economics from San Francisco State University, Herman served his country as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, exemplifying the courage and dedication that would define his later years. He then embarked on a distinguished 33-year career with the San Francisco Police Department, retiring as a Sergeant in 2003.
