James Lovill Obituary

Dr. James Edward Lovill left this world peacefully on January 22, 2025, at 82 years old in his home of 30+ years in the Fairfax hills. He was truly one of a kind and will be remembered for his passion for life, his prolific contributions to science, and the joy he brought to all beings he engaged with.

James (Jim) was born on Friday, February 13th, 1942, in Mountain City, Tennessee as Thomas Edward Lovill and Edith Irene Love Lovill’s only child. At seven years old, Jim became the youngest weather person employed by the US Weather Bureau taking weather measurements for Johnson County, Tennessee. After graduating from Mountain City High School, Jim attended Florida State University (FSU), where he majored in Meteorology and Mathematics. Before receiving his BA, the National Science Foundation selected him to lead a team of six other scientists to Antarctica. As a 22-year-old, he collected the initial Antarctic ozone measurements and became the youngest person to ‘winter over’ in Antarctica at Byrd Station during their 18-month data collection mission.

Upon his return from Antarctica, he received his BA from FSU (1966) and then moved “West” to California where he earned an MS in Meteorology from San Jose State University (1969) for his research on “The Vertical Distribution of Ozone over the San Francisco Bay Area”. He then relocated to Boulder, Colorado to further his education where he studied the distribution of ozone above Longs Peak, and established the Colorado altitude record (30,300 feet) for a glider flight during the gravity wave ozone research project, earning a PhD in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University (1972) for this work.

Jim then spent a short stint as a First Lieutenant in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War when the Strategic Air Command drafted him to develop defense strategies using his unique remote satellite sensing skills to assist the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program.

Over the next 15 years, Jim became; the Ozone Physicist and Meteorologist in charge of the South Pole Station, the Director of the Satellite Center at Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, and the Principal Investigator on a number of NOAA and NASA satellite sensor experiments while holding multiple atmospheric science research and teaching positions. His research focused on the development of meteorological and climatological studies on various special scales using satellite measurements, ozone studies, general circulation problems, high-altitude atmospheric variations, turbulence, Earth resource satellites, remote sensing, utilizing aircraft and rockets and computer analysis of environmental programs. He authored a book on ozone, co-authored another on space observations of aerosols and ozone, presented sixteen papers and had ninety publications to his credit.

Jim’s Antarctic scientific legacy has been honored by the historical landmark Lovill Bluff (73°22′S 126°54′W) located high above the Antarctic Ocean, and home to the Lovill Bluff Penguin Colony. Jim was a member of the: Antarctician Society, Arctic Institute of North America, American Geophysical Union, the Royal Meteorological Society of Great Britain, and other various societies. He ran a program collecting ozone data sets for NASA at Lawrence Livermore Lab (1978-1980), was on the NASA Wallops Instrumentation Panel (1980-1985), and participated on another panel that reviewed and assessed the NASA Langley Research Program (1982).

His global communication and advocacy while working with the United Nations helped lead to international bans on all products containing chlorofluorocarbons, which has allowed the ozone layer to gradually grow back. This is one of the few success stories of global environmentalism, and Jim was a huge part of it.

In 1984, Jim met the love of his life, Hope Nelson. They married in 1985. Jim and Hope were the ultimate partners and soulmates, co-creating a beautiful life together that lasted over 40 years. They were avid Grateful Dead fans and traveled to hundreds of shows over the following years.

Just before Jim and Hope’s first and only son, Sky, was born in 1991, Jim founded Lovill Associates, a company that delivered detailed particle/vapor emissions studies to address critical path flooring issues for Silicon Valley startups such as Genentech, Apple, CDC, Intel, Google, using a methodology he invented to troubleshoot these company’s flooring problems. Later, he would work as a docent at the Audubon Canyon Ranch in Marin County.

While fathering Sky, Jim helped build the single tracks in Tamarancho and became one of the most prodigious mountain bikers in Marin. Even at 80 years old, Jim made a point of biking up to a special tribute spot near Pine Mountain and Repack that he created to honor the life of Jerry Garcia. He felt a true kinship with Jerry and is with him now.

Jim is preceded in death by both of his parents, and is survived by his wife, Hope and son Sky who resides in South Island, New Zealand and was just engaged to his partner, Crystal Brindle, days before Jim’s passing.

Jim was always the most interesting person in the room. He lit up every new area he entered and embraced life with a wise, yet whimsical attitude that infected everyone around him. He had a scientific mind, but lived an athletic, artistic lifestyle. He was a mysterious, humble man who never bragged. He was a world class storyteller who lived out a life only a legend could.

What a long, strange, wonderful trip it was, dude. You are a true legend, and no one did it like you. Enjoy your time with Jerry and your family. Your spirit is strong and will be eternally honored.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday February 16th, 2025, 2:30pm - 5pm at the Fairfax Community Church, 2398 St. Francis Drake Blvd, Fairfax, CA 94930.
