Jane Ellen Stewart, a long-time resident of San Rafael and Fairfax and devoted parishioner of both St. Raphael’s and St.Rita’s parishes, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2022. She was born in Crested Butte, CO on September 9, 1933 to her parents, Anton Matkovich and Lena Shinnick. She and her family later moved to Northern California ultimately settling in San Rafael. After graduating from Marin Catholic High School, Jane pursued a career in Nursing, first graduating from Saint Mary’s School of Nursing, then with a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco and later with a master’s degree from San Jose State University. Jane was dedicated to her family, caring selflessly for her parents in their later life, by whom she is pre-deceased. In 1994, Jane married Jack Stewart, by whom she is also pre-deceased. She was a step-mother to Jack’s three children, John Stewart, Teresa Simi and Greg Stewart, a step-mother-in-law to their spouses, Mark Simi and Tricia Stewart, and a grandmother to nine grandchildren, Cailin, Emily, Aiden, Tyler, Brody and Olivia Simi and Jackson, Chase and Liam Stewart, all by whom she is survived. She is pre-deceased by her sister, Evelyn and is survived by her five nieces and nephews, Jean Lawler, Jane Young, Joseph Suggs, Mary Beld, John Suggs and their families. She lived an exemplary faith-filled life of thoughtfulness, generosity, and kindness towards all. Her smile and gentle nature will be forever remembered by all those who knew and loved her.
A Rosary Service will be held on Thursday, May 12th, 2022 at 7:30pm followed by a Funeral Mass on Friday, May 13th, 2022 at 11:00am at St. Rita’s Church in Fairfax, CA.
