John Donlan Obituary

John Robert Donlan

(1931 – 2026)

John Robert Donlan passed away on February 26th, 2026 at his home in San Rafael, CA, surrounded by his children.   John was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa, the youngest of 8 children, along with his twin brother Joe.   He served in the US Navy on an aircraft carrier during the Korean War.  After his service was completed, he enrolled in the University of Iowa where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. John left Iowa for San Francisco in the early 60’s where he met his wife, Marilyn, at a dance at Old Saint Mary’s Cathedral. The couple soon moved to Marin where they raised 4 children and enjoyed 46 wonderful years of marriage.   In addition to his years working in the paper products industry and supporting his growing family, he devoted time to volunteering for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This devotion to helping others in his community became a 60- year dedication of service.  At 90 years old, he received recognition from the U.S. National Council President of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul and was honored by his fellow Vincentians whom had shared his devotion to helping families and individuals in need.  John provided an amazing example of how to love life and lead with kindness and generosity.   John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marilyn, along with his twin brother Joe, brothers Gerald, Leo, Mike, Jim, and his sisters Marcella and Sr. Elizabeth.   He is survived by his four children, Sheila (Charlie), Matt, Jim, Dennis, and three loving grandchildren Aidan, Kellsey and Kalie and many nieces and nephews.   A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 24th at 10am at St. Raphael Church, San Rafael.  Donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
