Joseph "Joe" Bruce Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Eugene Bruce was born on June 11, 1926, in Oakland, California, to Robert J. Bruce and Aline Weltz. At the age of 10, Joe moved to Fairfax, California, where he would spend the rest of his life. Joe passed away on September 18, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Joe’s life was a testament to dedication—whether to his family, his faith, his country, or his community.

At the age of 18, Joe answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Navy in 1944. He served aboard the USS Marshall during World War II, forging bonds and memories that he carried with him long after his time in the Navy had ended. His service was a source of great pride, and he remained connected to his military roots throughout his life.

Following his time in the Navy, Joe spent his entire career with Pacific Bell Telephone Company, where he was known as a reliable and hard-working telephone man. His work reflected his steady nature and commitment to providing for his family, traits he carried into every aspect of his life. Even in retirement, he remained deeply entwined to the community he served for so many years.

Joe grew up with a deep love for Fairfax and its history, a passion he carried into his work as a founding charter member of the Fairfax parlor of The Native Sons of the Golden West, a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of California. His commitment to preserving the past was mirrored in his devotion to his parish, Saint Rita’s Catholic Church, where he was a dedicated parishioner throughout his adult life.

Joe was also a lifelong Bay Area sports fan, especially of the San Francisco 49ers, whom he followed from their early days. He was among the fans who watched games at Kezar Stadium, where the 49ers first took the field in the 1940s. His passion for the 49ers, along with the San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors, remained strong throughout his life.

In his free time, Joe found great joy in the outdoors. Whether he was gardening, casting a line, or tracking game, the peace and tranquility of nature brought him immense happiness. These pursuits reflected his deep connection to the natural world, a passion he carried with him throughout his life. Joe was also known for his amazing sense of humor and quick wit, bringing laughter to family gatherings and lifting the spirits of those around him.

In 1953, Joe married the love of his life, Mary Gladys Leal. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and family, celebrating 71 years of marriage. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, always placing family at the center of his world.

Joe was the sixth of seven siblings, and he was preceded in death by all of them: Helen Doyle, Robert Bruce, Elizabeth Caughie, Frances Trimble, Aline Seewester, and George Bruce. Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his daughter Rebecca Bruce (Allen Hiskey); son Thomas Bruce; daughter Karen Bruce Adams; and grandson Joshua Adams (Mario Cambern). He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Grace Farley and Jane Silva, as well as many nieces and nephews who were so near and dear to his heart.

Joe’s memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, wit, and generosity. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who supported Joe throughout his life, especially during his final days. In lieu of services, the family will gather privately to honor Joe's life.

In remembrance, contributions can be made to the Native Sons Of The Golden West, Fairfax Parlor #307 Scholarship Fund, 135 Mitchell Drive, Fairfax, CA 94930 in Joe’s name.
