Luigi Serchia, beloved father, husband, brother, nonno/papa, uncle, and friend to many, passed away surrounded by family on May 7, 2025 at age 87. He was born in Italy to Pio Serchia and Maria Marinetti. His mother passed away several months after he was born. He was raised by his aunt Michelina during WWII while his father was away in Africa serving in the Italian military. At age 20, he set off for France where he worked various jobs before immigrating via ship to San Francisco in 1961. Luigi lived with his father and younger brother Francesco on Polk Street while working in his uncle Pietro’s shoe repair shop during the day and New Joe’s restaurant at night. Luigi met his wife Diane Tabarracci in North Beach while working at New Joe’s, and in 1964, they married. Eventually he found employment in commercial building maintenance and janitorial services, working for the same company for nearly 60 years. Settling in San Anselmo, they raised their three sons. A skilled soccer player, Luigi was one of the founders of San Anselmo Youth Soccer, an accomplishment for which he was recognized by the Town of San Anselmo via Mayoral Proclamation in 2023. As an avid stamp collector, he enjoyed being a member of stamp clubs in both Marin and Italy.
A humble, hard-working, and generous man, Luigi enjoyed the simple things in life: spending time with his friends, family, especially his grandkids, helping others, and tending to his garden. He is survived by his sons Peter (Lynn), Andrew (Simone), his four grandchildren Nicholas, Michela, Silvana, Dominic, and brother Francesco. He is predeceased by his son Anthony and his wife of 44 years Diane.
Services will be held Saturday, June 28, at 11:00 AM at St. Anselm Church, 97 Shady Lane, Ross, CA.
Donations may be made to Shriners Children’s (shrinerschildrens.org).
