Maureen Brigid Cassidy
Died in San Rafael on February 7, 2024 at the age of 88. Born April 3, 1935 to the late Helen and Frank Cassidy of Ireland. Loved mother of Ann Yavorsky and John Yavorsky (Donna). Adored grandmother of Joshua Yavorsky (Kylee) and Jacob Yavorsky. Joyous great grandmother to Oliver, Carter and Aria Yavorsky. Dear friend to Nancy Cook. Loving sister of Dolores Bondanza (Joe), Bridget Brawley (Tom), and the late Helen Cassidy, William Cassidy, Frank Cassidy, and Rosaleen Adams. Loving sister-in-law to Lita Cassidy and Richard Barsotti and the late Leonard Meiswinkel, Judy Cassidy, and Anthony Adams.
Maureen was born in San Francisco, California. She attended St. Peter’s Grammar School and St. Peter’s High School. Upon graduation from high school, she entered the order of the Sisters of Mercy. She departed the convent after seven years and enrolled at Lone Mountain College where she earned her master’s degree in history. A lover of education, Maureen dedicated her life to the field including teaching for the Department of Defense in Germany, for Our Lady of Loretto in Novato and as principal of St. Rita’s School in Fairfax.
Maureen’s greatest love was spending time with her family often travelling to North Carolina, Georgia, and Alaska to see her grandchildren. Maureen enjoyed travelling the world, including her beloved Ireland fourteen times. She loved her home in Novato, often marveling at the view of the hills and sunsets from her windows. Maureen enjoyed gardening (winning awards for her tomatoes) and feeding the hummingbirds.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass to be celebrated on Friday, March 8th at 12:00pm at St. Anthony’s Church in Novato. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: www.stjude.org or your favorite charity. Private burial to follow.
