It is with sad hearts that we share the passing of Michel H. Nickel on Oct.14th, 2023. Mike, a long time resident of San Anselmo, died peacefully at his home. He was 87. Mike was born is Seattle, Washington in March 1936, where he attended Roosevelt High School, and later attended the University of Washington, majoring in journalism. He remained a lifelong Huskies football fan. Mike served in the US Air Force from 1958-1962, serving in Japan for three years and attaining the rank of Captain. Upon returning to the states he pursued his career in journalism, first at the Daily Review in Hayward, CA and later at the Marin Independent Journal in San Rafael, CA, until his retirement in 1998. Mike was an avid reader and lifelong learner; known for his bow-ties and dapper attire, he was a longterm member of the Art Deco Society and a fixture at the annual Gatsby picnic. Mike is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Ramsey Nickel in 1996, and his second wife, Darlene Thompson Nickel in 2020. He is survived by his only child, Ariel, currently residing in Athens, Greece and his step-family, Alex, Rachel, Jacob & Nathan, in San Francisco, CA.A celebration of Mike's life, followed by light refreshments, will be held at First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, 1510 Fifth Ave. on Saturday, November 25th at 2pm.
