Miho Kalcic Obituary

Miho Kalcic passed peacefully at home on February 16, 2026 surrounded by loved ones following a courageous battle with cancer.  Miho was born on February 9, 1945 in Pula, Yugoslavia to Euphemia and Ivan Kalcic. He is survived by his beloved companion of 45 years, Mary Lu Buich.

Miho led an incredible life, escaping communist Yugoslavia as a young man.  Following two failed attempts where he was captured and incarcerated, he eventually found freedom in Italy. His journey took him to Paris where he studied at the Sorbonne and worked at the infamous Maxime’s.  It was during his time in Paris that his Catholic faith took an unshakeable turn.  Miho was a devoted and reverent man of his Catholic Faith until his final breath.  Following Miho’s time in Paris he immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco and finding work on a fishing vessel that took him on yet another journey to Alaska.  Miho and his brother eventually bought two fishing vessels, The Morning Star and The Evening Star.  Miho skippered The Morning Star for many years always returning home to San Francisco in the off-season.

In 1980 Miho met the love of his life, Mary Lu, a first-generation Croatian, in San Francisco.  The next 45 years were filled with family, travelling the world and making wonderful memories.

Miho is predeceased by his only child, Julie Marie Kalcic; his parents, Euphemia and Ivan Kalcic; his brothers, Miro, Vito, Silvano and Iani.  He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Larkspur, California.

Special thanks to the care team from Marin Home Care, Va & Mita, angels who have become like family; to his nurse from Hospice by the Bay, Josh who has been a guiding light navigating us through the past year with the utmost compassion; Monsignor Michael Padazinski and Father Mikhael Milic for his spiritual care; and to his personal care team, Chris Miloslavich, Candace Addi, Eric and Parker Forbes.

Services have been entrusted to Monte’s Chapel of the Hills.

Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Larkspur on Monday, February 23, 2026 at 11:00 am with a reception following at Healy Hall.  A graveside burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma will follow.
