Richard Peter Nave, a beloved figure in San Rafael and Marin County, passed away peacefully on June 12th, surrounded by his family. Born on July 17, 1930, he was the youngest son of William and Irene Nave, and the last of his generation. Rich lived a remarkable life marked by his unwavering dedication to family, community, athletics, and public service.
Rich's journey began in San Rafael, where he attended St. Raphael's School and later San Rafael High School. This period marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to athletics, community service, and leadership. His leadership as Student Body President and his athletic prowess earned him the title of "Athlete of the Year" in 1948. It was during this time that he met his beloved wife, Dolly Wright, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage and raised a large, loving family of 8 children, 23 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.
Family life for Rich was vibrant and full of activity, centered around their home, the family business at Nave Lanes, and numerous community engagements. His passion for sports continued throughout his life, earning him induction into multiple Hall of Fames including those at San Rafael High School, College of Marin, Marin Athletic Foundation, and San Francisco State University.
Rich also served his country as a decorated member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, earning a teaching credential from San Francisco State University, before joining the family business.
His commitment to community service was immense, alongside Dolly, he spearheaded numerous public projects that have left a lasting impact on Marin County, including athletic facilities and recreational spaces that continue to serve generations.
Rich's love for his family was unparalleled, and he cherished every moment spent with his extensive family circle, particularly during holidays and vacations that often gathered more than 70 relatives spanning generations. His unique sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him, bringing joy and laughter even in challenging times.
Rich Nave will be remembered as a devoted husband, an inspiring father and grandfather, a civic leader, and a friend to many. His legacy of service, humor, and love for his community will continue to resonate for years to come.
Rich is survived by his children Kathy, Rich Jr., Patti (Alan), Sheri (Gary), Paul, and Thomas (Janice). He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Dolly and his sons Bruce and Louis.
In honoring Richard's memory, let us celebrate a life well-lived—a life dedicated to family, community, and the enduring values of love and laughter that he shared with us all.
The Viewing and Visitation is 6:00-6:30 p.m., followed by the Rosary and Vigil Rite, Thursday, June 27th at St. Raphael Catholic Church in San Rafael.
The Funeral Mass honoring the life of Richard Peter Nave will be held on June 28th at noon at St. Raphael Church in San Rafael. Family, friends, and members of the community are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Richard's remarkable life, his unwavering devotion to his family, his impactful contributions to the community, and his enduring spirit that touched so many.
