We lost Robert Wright Thompson, Jr., to cancer on June 17, 2023. Bobby passed away at his home in Larkspur, California, with his devoted wife, Suzanne, by his side.
Bobby was born on February 22, 1948, in Trenton, New Jersey, the oldest of four children born to Gloria B. Thompson and Robert W. Thompson, Sr. A few years later, the family moved to Thompson Farms, a newly created enterprise in central New Jersey. Bobby would often recall that this 1,000-acre vegetable farm, operated by his grandfather, father, and uncle, was at one time one of the largest and most innovative farms in New Jersey.
After graduating from Northern Burlington County Regional High School in 1966, where he was captain of the wrestling team, played football, and was involved in many other school activities, Bobby attended Rutgers University. While there, he joined the Zeta Psi Fraternity, and in 1970 he graduated with a BA in Journalism.
Moving to Larkspur in the early 1970s, Bobby successfully pursued a career investing in and managing residential real estate in Marin County and other areas. Upon settling there with his partner Anne Muhlenberg, he helped raise her children, Larry and Jennifer. Bobby and Anne eventually married. She passed away in 1992.
Bobby and Suzanne met while serving on Marin County jury duty. They partnered for many years and married in 2009. As a long-time resident of Larkspur, Bobby was popular and well-regarded by friends and neighbors for his generosity, kindness, warmth, humor, and hospitality. He was a great storyteller who loved socializing with family and friends and entertaining them with amusing anecdotes.
He and Suzanne loved to travel during their time together. When not traveling, Bobby loved reading, watching his beloved 49ers and classic movies, and listening to 60s music. He especially enjoyed the companionship of their dog Nikki and cat Sammy.
Bobby is dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Suzanne; his three sisters, Leslie, Sally, and Paige, and their families; his extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins; his neighbors; and by the extensive network of friends with whom he loved to stay connected and who knew and loved him.
