Thomas Soden Obituary

We celebrate the life of Thomas “Tom” Soden, who peacefully passed away on September 2, 2025, in San Francisco.

Tom was born on May 5, 1947, in San Francisco to a wonderful Irish-Italian family, the son of Dorothy Cuneo Soden and Virgil Soden. The family, affectionately known as the “San Francisco Mix,” made their home in the city until 1951, when they moved north, settling in Greenbrae in Marin County. There, Tom attended Greenbrae Elementary and Kent Middle School before graduating from Marin Catholic High School in 1965, where he created many fond memories on the basketball court and baseball field. He went on to study economics at the University of San Francisco, where he played basketball during his freshman and sophomore years, and graduated summa cum laude in 1969.

Encouraged by his longtime mentor and economics professor, Fr. Richard Mulcahy, Tom pursued his interest in the stock market. Tom’s career as a financial manager began with Dean Witter in San Francisco. He later worked with Morgan Stanley in San Rafael and ultimately with Wells Fargo, where he retired after 53 years in the business. A true people person, Tom had a gift for connecting with others and could strike up a conversation with nearly anyone. Most of his clients became lifelong friends, and Tom often said he “never worked a day in his life,” because he loved what he did.

Outside of work, Tom loved being out on the golf course and always looked forward to the annual Greco-Roman Tournament in Graeagle, where sharing laughs, food and drinks with friends was just as important as the game. He was also a longtime San Francisco Giants fan, closely following every season, and enjoyed going to ball games with family and friends by his side.

Above all, Tom’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen Soden; his daughter, Meredith Soden Dennis (James); his son, Tommy Soden (Paige); and his grandchildren, Emilia and Wyatt Dennis, whom “Pop Pop” adored. He is also remembered by his nieces, Jennifer Soden Bernauer and Margaret Soden Appenheimer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Soden, in 2013.

The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Mark and Pat Schubert, who spoke to Tom nearly every day for more than 50 years, and to his many friends near and far who meant so much to him. Tom leaves us all with smiles, love, and the memory of a life well lived.
