Virginia "Ginny" Pabst Obituary

Virginia “Ginny” Fairchild Pabst

February 14, 1942 - November 3, 2023

Ginny Pabst passed away peacefully at her home in Greenbrae, CA, on November 3, 2023, with her family at her side. The daughter of Ralph and Sara Fairchild, Ginny was born in Long Island, New York and grew up in Roslyn, NY.

She graduated from Westtown School and went on to attend Brown University. During her third year at Brown, Ginny met her future husband, Alan Pabst. Ginny graduated from Brown in 1963 and was married a week later. That same year, Alan left for Vietnam. Their first child, Alan Jr., was born while he was deployed. Upon his return in 1967, Ginny and her family settled in Bernardsville, NJ. Their daughter, Rebecca, was born a year later.

Ginny spent her adult life as a social worker and was committed to community service. Following the birth of Alan Jr., she volunteered at the Red Cross and later worked at the Bernardsville Library. In 1973, the family moved to San Rafael, CA. From 1979-1981, Ginny was President of AAUW. In 1988, she began working for the College of Marin Foundation. Ginny joined the PEO NE Chapter in 1994 and remained an active member until her passing.

She was always interested in serving the public. In 1995, Ginny became a docent at the California Academy of Sciences where she volunteered for 18 years. From 1995 to 1998, Ginny served as the Program Director of the Alzheimer’s Association. She also volunteered for the United Way for 15 years, served on the San Rafael Cultural Affairs Commission, and was on the board of the Suicide Prevention Agency.

In addition to her work within her community, Ginny enjoyed books, poetry, traveling with her husband, hiking, intellectual conversations, and the outdoors. She found the most peace and joy by being outside and soaking in all the beauty that the world had to offer.

Ginny's greatest losses were the passing of her daughter Rebecca at the age of 26, and the loss of her true love, Alan, who passed away in 2021.

Ginny is survived by her son Alan Pabst Jr, his wife Eileen Carey, and her four grandchildren whom she adored; Miranda Pabst, Anna Pabst, Cara Pabst, and James King. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, and seven nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, 1510 Fifth Avenue, San Rafael, CA 94901.
